1st time elk hunting

I am going to be doing some elk hunting near Craig Colorado for the first time and I am just curious. Does anyone use ground blinds to hunt this area or is it all spot and stalk?
Thanks
John

What season and by what method are you hunting?
I've never even seen an archer use a ground blind for elk hunting, though I imagine someone might on a water hole. If you're hunting with a rifle on public land, just set yourself up on a nice saddle or slightly open basin and let the other hunters drive the elk towards you. There isn't any spot and stalk involved around Craig, it's more like sit and wait for the action to come. Or if you're brave, you can head towards the gunfire.
I know that sounds crass, but that's how it's done on opening morning in that area. If you haven't filled, then you can try finding water holes, bedding areas and still hunting the timber (lots of mature aspen, so there's plenty of shooting lanes). Few guys manage to harvest after opening day out there, but I suspect it's because the elk finally found some sort of refuge in heavy coniferous timber. So seek that out for still hunting after opening day.

I am going for the second season. I am buying an out of state over the counter tag. I just moved to Wyoming and have a years waiting before I can hunt here so I thought I would try Colorado this year. I am going to be rifle hunting.
Thanks for the information.

i've never seen anyone use a ground blind for elk around that area. 2nd season is kind of a tough hunt if your going out northwest of Craig. It takes a lot of snow to get the elk down in that area especially during second season. This is all if your hunting in unit 3 or 301. it's mostly sage brush and cedar country. If your thinking of area 4 to the east of craig then that area has pine forests. These areas get a lot of pressure during the rifle seasons but it can be one of the most productive hunts if you outsmart the crowds. I would try to go later if i was you. just a few thoughts

That's a good point about going later. 3rd season success drops, but the hunter numbers do too. Or consider going during the latter half of 2nd season. There will likely be even fewer hunters than opening weeked of 2nd or 3rd.
However, I've heard that the road up towards the Bear's Ears gets pretty tricky late in the season. But that's probably true anywhere, so bring chains.

I agree! ... had a hell of time getting around anywhere in the area last season!!! Though road 110 between Black Mountain & Lost Park was my nightmare last year! Spent 4.5 hours digging out of the deep stuff during fourth season! Had kinda conceeded to the fact that I was gonna spend the night right there next to my truck in a snow cave... Yes

My Little Mule got me out though! Thumbs up

definetly agree with hellomcfly
anything thing west of the highway between baggs wy and craig needs snow
on the east side have hunted ther as as a backup for 5 years saw elk 2years
cause of snow none last year cause it was around 70 degress
always during 2cnd season
if you see an elk with no snow go buy a lottery ticket
jk
but not far from the truth
