1ST TIME BEAR HUNTER

I am hunting in Central Wi. I started baiting a few months ago. I had a couple cubs and a few big slobs coming in until about to weeks ago. Now only the smaller ones are coming in. I have not changed my bait and I bait every 4 days between 8:30 am-9:30 am. I have gotten alot more night activity as I have a lot more night pictures. I do not use the flash so I am not sure what is coming in at night. I was thinking of staying in that stand for a week and if the bigger bears do not return to make another stand and start baiting in a different spot. What are your thoughts?

Re: 1ST TIME BEAR HUNTER

Bears will come and go at their pleasure with seemingly no rhyme or reason. It seems theres one thing I can't get through to my hunters. Be Patient! Just like Arnold, They'll be back. Might take three or four days but they'll be back. If you are actively hunting that bait site now, and think they're hitting more and more at night, reduce the amount of bait, don't increase it. It forces competition and they won't wait til after dark to hit it.

Everything Sawbill said...competition is good at a bait site. If the big boys come in and find little to no food left it may make them a little moodie. They'll be in earlier to see who's been taking their hand out or just try and be in line first. It won't happen over night...like Sawbill said..."be patient". They've been to your site before...they will not forget where it's at. Do you use sweets..ex: cupcakes, ho-ho's, bread ect???

How did your season go Sawbill?? We had pretty good luck..if I can figure out this picture thing I'll post some pics of the bear we had coming in....

I AM USING CRAISIN AND PIE FILLING, DONUTS, BREAD AND CORN MIXED.
IS IT BAD AT THIS POINT TO MAKE ANOTHER BAIT STATION? I DO HAVE A MONTH OF HUNTING. IT HAS BEEN THREE WEEKS WITH OUT ANY DAYTIME PICS. tHE PICS I HAVE SHOWN TO PEOPLE SAY A COUPLE OF THESE BEAR RUN OVER 400IBS. ONE IS POSSIBLY CLOSE TO 600. i REALLY WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THEM CLOSE. i AM ON PRIVATE LAND SO THERE SHOULD BE NO-ONE ELSE IN THE AREA BAITING

JPillar...forget luring any other bear to your site...anybody would be crazy not to take this bear!!!! The distance between the ears on the last picture is real good...really good!!! He has a big head and the body to match. What else could you want...daylight to boot!!! I would be willing to say that bear would easily go 400lbs.+ He is very thick all the way through. Do what you've been doing on the baiting..you don't need ANYTHING fancy to keep him there. He's comfortable around that bait site or you wouldn't see him during the daylight like this. You say you bait early in the morning?? Can you bait more than once every 4 days?? This might be to your advantage...we baited heavy 8/5/06 and couldn't get back to Canada until 8/12/06...everything was gone. We baited everyday just not as heavy...2 days before season we cut back to 2 buckets of sweets and a bag of meat. The next day all was licked clean..the day before season we baited with 1 bucket of each and the same opening day. We baited between 10:00am & 1:00pm and we had a lot of bears in by 7:00pm with the big ones showing up at dark or before. I wouldn't change anything in your set up now because you could "bump" him out of there. Keep adding enough bait to keep him interested and like Sawbill said "be patient". Is your season in right now?? If you could bait more often I think you'll get what your looking for...if the food isn't there he will go looking elsewhere. Thumbs up

right, I haven't seen him since, but I have a lot more night pictures, I really want this bear, I juat hope he is not coming in at night now. Season opens up Sept 6th- October 10th. I have time. I just not sure what to do to get him back in for the daytime. I have heard bait less for compitition and I have heard bait more to keep him coming. Not sure what to do.

Piller.
why are u making it hard on yourself ? why u don't use the flash and see who's hitting ur site at night ? u r not gona spook the bear, and if u did u got nothing to lose !
it will be a lot easier if u know all the answers .. use it and if it is the same bear then u can do something about it, but to guess and wonder is not the way to go !

u will hear many stories and advice when hunting bears,, they are all good advice,, some are diffferent but it does not mean it won't work, to find out u need to try them and see which one work better..
we all know bears eat a lot especially at this time of the year to get ready for hibernation,, so if not enough food they will go look for food else where ... what i want u to do is to take a look at the massive body this bear has and tell me if 10 pound of food is enough to keep this bear around ?

fall bear hunt is not the same as the spring bear hunt !
i don't want to discourage anyone here but fall bear hunt over baits is the most difficult hunt u can imagine.. what is happening to u right now is nothing yet, u will see a lot more, so be prepared for it .
i said it once and will say it again, fall bear hunt force many expreienced bear hunters to get down on their kneez and ........... Brick Wall,)
having said that u can still hunt them but not as easy as some may think !
i am sorry if i hijacked ur post, not my intention, just wanted u to know and be prepared for it.
i am sure the guys ( nontypical and sawbill ) will help u find a way to nail this monster !!
