16 E vs 13

Never applied for elk in NM so I need some help. Im looking for a real good hunt with chances at a 330+ bull. I have horses and can pack in if need be. Im looking at a muzzleloader hunt and have these two units picked out, there maybe better units out there but the odds indicate they are much harder to draw. Is there anything out there Im missing that would produce a 330+ bull with similar draw odds? I would do a rifle hunt that would produce too.

Between 13 and 16E which one will be the better hunt? Will they be bugling during the first muzzleloader season?

Between 13 and 16E, I would choose 16E, they both have the class of bull you are looking for, if you have packed the horses and willing to bring them, the will need to get use to the elevation, go back as far as you can. The bulls will be singing during that time, how hard that I don’t know. Best of luck

When I hunt I like to get back way back. I don't start hunting until I'm as least 1 mile form a road, in 16E you will find more of this type of area. If you read my story about ATV's you will see that I like the back country.
As a rule of thumb 16E has better bulls and more back areas.

Ditto what MBird said! I was looking @ 13 as a third choice easy to draw unit, but it's more a Migration, or Landowner tag area for elk.IMHO But it's still in my deer hunt list. The 16e unit is known for big bulls. Try 15 and 10 too for mz. All will be on list for next year.

Jeremy,

I would also put in for 16E. You cant go wrong with the gila and if you are looking for a 330+ bull that is the place to go with good draw odds. Unit 13 has bulls of this caliber but most are on private land.

Jeremy,
Ihunted1 year in each, both are nice units. 16e I passed on legal bulls almost everyday,but I never did see one over 300 in. The next year I hunted 13 saw 0 elk the first day, tried another spot the second,saw a 370+, couln't get a shot at, he busted me(actually the cows did ) .went back the next day could't find any elk.Went to another spot the following morning took a 350''6x7. I enjoyed both hunts to the max...Happy hunting...............
