12 Ga. for coyotes Question ?????

Would anyone have any experience with 12 Ga on coyotes ???. What would be out of range for a kill ????. Need a little in put . I'll be shooting full choke and # 4 buck or 3 in. BB . Going to try calling after the snareing is over at the end of Feb . I also have a 22 LR with a 3 x 9 Bushnell scope . Maybe that would be a better choice . I have a 30-06 but i'd like to cut down on the dammage of the pelt ..Open for tips or suggestions ......Thanks !!!!!!!

not sure what the rules are in ns nail but here in nb if it aint deer season you can use buckshot or slugs in your shotgun. were only allowed to use bird shot and thats why alot of lads dont bother with it.

I've never used a shotgun on coyote, but I've heard it's handy for those unexpected close shots. Especially at night. As for shot size. Think I think for the pelt's sake though, you'd be better off with the .22 long.

I think you will find that when one comes to a call he will stay out of 12 gauge range.I use a 34"Single shot full choke 10 gauge.Good to 100 yards. Also use 00 buck or #2's.

I think you need to borrow hammers 22 mag. If I lived closer to you you could use my .220 swift. It leaves one entrance wound but doesn't exit with the varmint bullets. The insides are blended by the bullet "exploding". Your deer rifle with very hard bullets would also be an option. They shouldn't mushroom and will go clean through. The 22 lr might be ok but it is a bit on the light side. The 12 gauge will leave alot of small holes in the pelt or big holes if you go with the slugs/buckshot.

12 Ga. for coyotes Question ?????

I've taken a grand total of 3 coyotes and 1 cat over the years with my Mossy 835.....i was using Fed #2 3.5" with a turkey choke. That gun just plain scares the crap outta me!....kicks like 10 mules!! But it does plant a called coyote pretty hard at around 30yds or closer....although one I had to shoot twice...after I got my breath back from the first shot !! I originally bought the gun for those times when I wanted to hunt a really tight area or I knew there was a cat around and I had a tag. But most of the time.....it just sits in the safe.

12 Ga. for coyotes Question ?????

Thenail, A 12 gauge shotgun is actually a good gun for coyotes under 70 yards. The ammo I would use is a buckshot called hevi-shot dead coyote. Claiming to have an extended range of about 70 yards. they are a little expensive but for that nice pelt it is worth it. Also a 12 gauge does not damage the pelt much at about 50 yards.
