1 week away

leaving 1 week from today for 1st rifle season . this is my first year hunting colorado. hows the weather around Meeker this year? It's been warm here . I asume if it's unseasonably warm there the elk will be around 10,000 feet . does anyone have any thoughts on this.

weather

Typically, this time of year it's hotter than the hubs of hell....or cold with two feet of snow. Honestly, it's probably too early to tell. Even if you look at the forecast, it can change. Be prepared for colder weather but take stuff that you can peel off in layers if it gets warmer. Sometimes you'll wake up to a hard frost with temps in the 20's at night and be sweating bullets by lunchtime. You just never know. It's mountain weather and can change in a heartbeat. I'm serious. One year we were hunting just east of Meeker on Sleepy Cat and a storm blew in and it went from pleasant and warm to howling wind, sleet, then wet snow and the temps kept dropping. A guy hunting out of a camp just off FR 250 went out for the afternoon hunt dropping into the Milk Creek drainage in a flannel shirt, no raingear, no pack, no nothing. He got lost. He panicked. He fired his warning shots until he was out of ammo. He had a radio and could talk to the guys in his camp but he didn't know where he was. He spent the night in the woods....no fire, wet and cold. His buddies and son in camp talked to him on the radio to try to keep his spirits up but they could tell he was fading and hypothermic. Search and rescue showed up the next morning and started searching for him. They were about to give up looking and stumbled on the guy under a pine tree on the way out. Severe hypothermia, almost dead. They got him out and he survived as far as I can tell. It turns out there was another hunter lost down by Three Points and they were trading three shot "I'm lost" signals. The other guy made it out that night on his own.

Don't mess with mountain weather. I always take snowshoes. Sometimes they sit in the truck. Sometimes I'm really glad I've got them. It beats walking the roads because the snow is waist deep everywhere else.

Good luck on your hunt!

It has been real warm here,

It has been real warm here, so unless we cool off alot I would also expect the elk to high on the mountain, so i would hunt as high as you can or look for dark timber stands.  Good luck and shoot straight.

Where are you planning to hunt?

What area are you planning to hunt? Feel free to PM me. I'm not elk hunting this year so I might be able to point a couple of places for you to look around. If you already have your place picked out, I might be able to give you a back-up plan.
