A Grand Junction, Colorado man was having trouble with a red bird harassing his cats. Derrill Rockwell, had a .22 caliber rifle by his door that he used for other rodents around his house. On October 5th, early in the morning he spotted something red that looked like the bird harassing his cats. He grabbed his rifle, aimed, and shot at the "bird." Later he heard moaning.

The "bird" ended up being the red mohawk of a young transient woman who had fallen asleep at the top of a hill by Rockwell's home. The bullet grazed her head, and she came to Rockwell's door with blood. Rockwell offered her a towel for her head and drove her to the hospital for treatment. He left his name and number with hospital staff. Rockwell went home grabbed the rifle, and took it to a park where he threw it into the Colorado River. He told the hospital staff that the girl had shown up at his door and he was just helping out. Then 6 days later after the guilt ate away at him, he told investigating officers what had happened, even though his attorney had told him not to.

Rockwell will get 5 years probation for pleading guilty to felony possession of a weapon by a prior offender. The District Attorney’s Office dismissed remaining charges, including tampering with evidence, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and false reporting. He was ordered to pay more than $10,000 in restitution. The victim left Colorado soon after the shooting, and was not there for the hearing. From GJSentinel.com.
