Javelina Hunt: Pure Bowhunting Fun The morning deer hunt was eventful, yet as we drove to another section of the ranch the real bowhunting action was about to start. There they were, about a half dozen big javelina feeding out in the open. Trying for a collared peccary with my longbow was definitely one of my goals for this trip, and now it looked like I was going to get my chance at one right off the bat. |

How to Accurately Judge Target Distance A gentle breeze lazily wafted the tall blades of fescue to and fro across my field of view. Muscles tensed and eyes straining to focus on my target, I was confident I could make the shot. What bothered me was my less-than-perfect ability to accurately judge the long-range distances. I was certain the pronghorn was over 200 yards but just how much further was unknown. In my opinion, antelope are one of the most difficult animals to shoot at; not because they're particularly elusive, but due to their size and where they live. Wide open spaces and a relatively small target can make for deceptive shooting. |

Hunting and Calling Javelina Let me first state, predator calling for Javelina should only be used in a situational manner (I'll explain later). If used incorrectly or in the wrong situation, predator calls will prove worthless. In fact, it will scare the Javelina herd away 99.9 percent of the time. Despite predator calling limitations, it's without a doubt the most exciting way to hunt Javelina. Using a predator call exploits the Javelina's propensity to counter attack predators and come to aid wounded or distressed herd mates. |
